St. Peter’s College played their first match of the 2014/15 cricket season against St. Aloysius College at Galle International Stadium during the weekend. The match ended without a result due to bad weather conditions and only 118.3 overs were bowled on both days.
St. Peter’s led by right-handed middle order batsman Chandula Jayamanna led a team filled new faces who are determined to start the season with a high. Due to bad weather the match got underway at 2.15pm after lunch on day one. The toss was won by the home team skipper and he had no doubts to put the visitors to bat first.
The Peterite top order was collapsed by the bowling of medium fast-bowlerr Sajith Sankalpa who bagged 4 wickets for just 56 runs. Chandula Jayamanna could only manage to score 9 runs and the others followed without much contribution. Late middle-order pair of Vinu Mohotti and Didulana Mendis held the Peters innings together by scoring 47 and 40 respectively as they were bowled out for just 181 in 69.3 overs in the morning session on day 2 after being 122/7 overnight.
St. Aloysius innings was interrupted several times due to rain. Wicket-keeper batsman Navidu Nirmal managed to score 38 runs out of the 106 runs they managed to put up on the board before rain stopped play. Peterites managed to bag 6 wickets with off-spinner Vinu Mohotti scalping 4 wickets for 29 runs.
