Asian Games 2014: Sri Lanka women claims the Bronze

Today is the 08 th day of the 17th Asian Games 2014, with cloudy weather in the morning and heavy rain in the late afternoon.

In Women’s Cricket, Sri Lanka beat China by 05 wickets to win the Bronze Medal.It was the first ever medal for Sri Lanka in the sport at Asian Games level.The fact is that the firm favourites huffed and puffed,lost half the side and were stretched well into the last quarter of their innings to go past the minnows for the minor medal.China won the toss and elected to bat.Walking out to the middle at the fall of the 1st wicket,Miao Yu remained 26 no,the only bat to get to two figures. China totalled 65/6 in 20 overs.Madhuri Samuddhika 2/05 and Inoka Ranaweera 2/18 were the most successful bowlers.The former dropped a sitter catch at mid-off and the latter was deprived of the first ever hatrick of wickets in Women’s Cricket at Asian Games.The Sri Lankans failed to score in the first two overs.Chamari Atapattu promoted herself to open the innings but took 09 balls to hit a straight drive to the fence to open scoring for her as well as for the team.The skipper hit 3 fours before being dismissed for 16.Shashikala Siriwardene and Dilani Manodara both scored 12 runs each.Fengfeng Song captured 2/08.Sri Lanka 66/5 in 17.1 overs.China were not disgraced but kept their dignity intact despite the loss.They played good basic cricket.

Windsurfer Chameera Lakshan Gunawardene was placed 7th and last after 8racersin the Mistral Men’s event.Today he finished  7th in the 7th race and 6th inthe 8th race.He will continue racing over 4 more races.

Tommorrow the focus will shift to Athletics and Boxing. Chandrika Subhashini Rasnayake willrun in the 1st Heat of the Women’s 400 M. Erandi De Silva will step on to the ring to fight with the opponent from Macau in Women’s 51kgs while in the Men’s 52kgs Dilanka Suresh Pattiaarachchi will meet his opponent from Japan.
