Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee, during a meeting held at the board headquarters on Monday, has decided to curtail the extraordinary powers enjoyed by its controversial secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.

Ranatunga virtually administered the sport with an iron fist and was Sri Lankan cricket’s most powerful official, but the SLC Ex-Co has now decided to hand significant amount of powers to its CEO Ashley de Silva, a senior official of SLC told ‘The Island’.

An official, who is aware of the developments, stated that the Sports Ministry refrained from interfering with curtailing Ranatunga’s powers after SLC Chief Jayantha Dharmadasa threatened to resign.

Ranatunga is believed to be extremely unpopular among SLC employees and members of the current National cricket team as well. Senior players Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have openly criticised his conduct.
