The 2014 SSC Open ‘A’ grade tennis tournament came to a close on the 26th of June. The tournament which played host to a number of talented players showcased Tennis of the highest caliber over the course of the tournament which was played for over two weeks.
Dineshkanthan Thangarajah and Amritha Muttiah walked away with the top honors as they scored wins in the Men’s Open Singles and Women’s Open Singles respectively. Thangarajah was in complete control throughout the tournament as he dropped only one set en route to the final. He defeated Tanveer Ashiq in the finals with a score line of 6-2 3-0 before Ashiq was forced to retire as he was still recovering from his mammoth five set win in the semi finals against Sankha Atukorale. Amritha Muttiah who has established herself as Sri Lanka’s finest player as far as the women’s game is concerned, upheld her reputation as she battled her way to yet another title. She faced tough competition in the finals courtesy the talented Roshenka Fernando who raced away with the first set 6-2. However Muttiah showed her class as she fought back to win the second and third sets 7-5 7-5 resulting in a well earned 2 sets to one victory.
Sankha Atukorale who is known for his crafty play and speed executed his style of play brilliantly to win both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles. He partnered one of the countries up and coming stars in the likes of Nishangan Nadarajah in the Men’s Doubles event. The duo created an upset of sorts in the semi-finals when they defeated the top seeds Thangarajah and Ashiq in straight sets. They went onto take this form into the finals as they defeated the second seed pairing of Rohan De Silva and Delwar Hossain 6-4 6-3 6-4. In the mixed doubles Sankha paired up with yet another young talent Medhira Samarasinghe to defeat the combination of Thangarajah and Kemalie Herath 3-6 6-0 6-3.
