Cream of Sri Lanka Cricket to battle out for Super Fours title

Sri Lanka won the World T20 in Bangladesh in April and since then the Lankans have not looked back in the shorter format of the game winning their solitary game against England last month. 

Kings of T20 cricket will be in action once again in their local premier T20 tournament – SLC Super Fours which was first played in 2013 after SLPL was dismantled from SLC calendar plans due to various issues. Sri Lanka’s best players will be in action during this 6-day tournament. 

SLC Super Fours Tournament was introduced with an intention of creating a window for local players to take part in the Champions League T20 (CLT20), the annual international T20 cricket competition played amongst the top domestic teams from major cricket playing nations. CLT20, which was launched in 2008, feature teams from India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

One of the significant aspects of this tournament will be the opportunity for the young and upcoming local players to play and interact with world class stars such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews. 

Four provincial teams named as Western Troopers, Udarata Rulers, Southern Express and Yaal Blazers will take part in this tournament and in the first round, all the four teams will play each team once. At the completion of the first round, the highest points gained team will comfortably qualify for the finals while the 2nd and 3rd placed teams will vie for the last berth in the finals from a play-off encounter. All the matches will be played at Sinhalese Sports Club grounds.

Western Troopers 

The Western Troopers led by Sri Lankan Test and ODI skipper Angelo Mathews will be representing the Western Province of Sri Lanka.  Western Troopers boast of players in the caliber of Sri Lanka’s best spinner in the shorter format of the game, Sachithra Senanayake and the likes of talented all-rounder Chathuranga De Silva.  Kithruwan Vithanage, Dimuth Karunarathne will burden the batting responsibilities while Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Gamage will spearhead the bowling attack.

Kandurata Rulers

During the 2013 edition, Kandurata Maroons won the Super Fours championship and Kandurata Rulers squad is filled with players who were a part of the Kandurata Maroons outfit last year. Lahiru Thirimanne will captain the Kandurata Rulers which consists of world-class legends such as Kumar Sangakkara. Kandurata Rulers bowling attack will be led by Nuwan Kulasekara, Nuwan Pradeep and Dhammika Prasad while they possess quality spinners in Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv. Experienced campaigners in Upul Tharanga, Dilhara Lokuhettige and Chamara Silva will strengthen the batting lineup.

World T20 winning skipper, Lasith Malinga will once again look to add more silverware under his name when he leads his hometown Southern Express team. T.M Dilshan and Kusal Janith will make up a dangerous opening pair for the boys from South while ‘Slinga’ Malinga will have the services of Dilruwan Perera, Seekuge Prasanna and Farveez Maharoof  to ensure a match winning bowling department. Angelo Perera, Andy Solomons and impressive Niroshan Dickwella will make up the rest of the batting order.

Wicket-keeper batsman, Dinesh Chandimal will enjoy captaining a strong Yaal Blazers team which is  bursting with match winners such as legendry Mahela Jayawardene and hard hitting Thisara Perera. Sri Lanka’s Test spearhead Shaminda Eranga will lead the potent Yaal Blazers bowling attack which will be well-supported by the likes of Rangana Herath and Akila Dhananjaya. Middle order batsmen in Ashan Priyanjan, Chamara Kapugedara and Jeewan Mendis will have to play their best games to put up challenging scores for Yaal Blazers in this competition.
