Youthful squash team for Asian Senior Championship

A youthful Sri Lanka Squash team took flight in the early hours today to participate in the 17th; Asian Senior Squash Championship to be held in Hong Kong from 11 to 16 June.

 

They will participate along with India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, Iran, Qatar, Singapore, Iraq, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Macau and China.

All matches will be played by three-member teams and the standard of squash is expected to be world class since many high ranking world players are participating in this tournament including Nicole David the women’s world champion.

This is the youngest squash team that Sri Lanka has ever fielded the future in mind and building of a champion unit with many more foreign exposures in the near future. Five members of the team are still schooling, two members of the boys team are from DS Senanayake and the girls one each from Visakha, Sirimavo and Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya. Six members of this team are also selected to participate at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Scotland later this year.

The President of the Squash Federation Com. Palitha Weerasinghe speaking to the media emphasized that he expects this team to perform well and better their rankings in the Asian circle giving them a better draw in future tournaments. This will also encourage the building of a winning unit in the future.

All players are below the age of 22 and this gives room for a good future and valuable experience for the players.
