CWW Kannagara College lost their unbeaten tag today after losing to Wesley College in a close tussle by 12 points (1 goal, 1 try) to 5 points (1 try). This plate championship match was played at Science College grounds in Mt.Lavinia.
Neither team managed to put points on the scoreboard in the first half as the score remained 00 – 00 at half time. Too many unforced errors conceding possession and territory for both sides saw a scoreless first half as a few chances went a begging for both teams. However this did not by any means affect intensity of the game as both teams battled out it out for supremacy.
Full back Lahiru Lakshan of CWW Kannangara once again showed great character with his good sight on the field kicked into space gaining good yardage for his team. He made courageous breaks on the blind side but failed to release the ball to the supporting player on a few occasions. Kannagara in the first half had about 70% possession but failed make use of the possession and toad pressure to the Weslyites.
Wesley’s first choice hooker being injured affected their lineouts.As the first few line outs went astray. Neither team wanted to take the penalty’s given and kick in to touch or take the three points on offer as they opted for a quick taps in most occasions.
Half Time (Wesley 00 – CWW 00)
After the resumption CWW lock forward Kasun Perera was yellow carded for collapsing a maul. Wesley unfortunately did not capitalize on the one man advantage. Wesley played aggressive rugby in the second half yet Kannagara did manage to hold their ground and deny any line breaks. Centre Malka Madhushan’s drop goal attempt went just wide of the uprights.
It took 60 minutes to hear the first ‘zam zam zaky’ been chanted by the Wesley supporters as Wesley broke free from their own half with the speedy winger Chamika Samaratunga who covered a good ground eventually passed to full back Lahiru Prasad who scored under the post. Ishara Madhusan missed the easy conversion. (Wesley 05 – CWW 00)
A few minutes later Wesley managed to score another try in similar fashion when Chamika Samaratunga made another break .Well supported by Prasad who scored his second try of the match in the left corner. Lahiru Prasad Himself made the tough conversion looks easy. (Wesley 12 – CWW 00)
Time was ticking and CWW attacked relentlessly, Captain Dinesh Lakmal runs sideways fending off two Wesley defenders and his pass to Malka Madhushan earned their first points in the left corner. Lakmal missed the conversion on his second attempt.

It was too little too late for CWW Kannangara as their unbeaten run ended. However, they still have a great chance of coming in to the top tier next season provided they register to wins in the next two games.
