Low scoring affair Sebastians v De Mazenod

Bowlers dominated in a low scoring game as all 20 first innings wickets fell for 98 runs in an U-19 Inter-school cricket match between St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and De Mazenod College, Kandana at Moratuwa today.

 

On a day when conditions were perfect for cricket, neither team batted as if it was so, as the bowling was kept tight in both innings of the game from both ends of the pitch.

Hosts, St. Sebastian’s batting first were folded for 51 all out in 26.5 overs, which saw Shan Fernando top-scoring with a soft 15. L Jayadeva offered little support with 11 from 17 balls including two boundaries as none of the other batters could reach double figures. Four batsmen were sent back to the pavilion without scoring. Shaluka Deemantha bagged four for 11, while Lahiru Wickramsinghe took three for nine for De Mazemnod College. Akash Senaratne also picked up two for nine runs.

De Mazenod’s after a brilliant effort with the ball collapsed dramatically as they were bowled out for 47 runs with Shaluka Deemantha top scoring on 13 runs. None of the other batters could get into double figures as hosts claimed wickets at regular intervals to gain a first innings lead of 4 runs.

Lahiru Heshan led the bowling with four for 22 while Shan Fernando, Kusal Lakthilina and Umesh Morais claimed two wickets each to perform a miraculous recover.

At stumps on day one  hosts were 142 for three with Sangeeth Cooray scoring an unbeaten 81 off 122 balls with 13 boundaries while Luke Jayadeva contributed with a 77 ball 42 with five boundaries and a six. Duo shared 111 runs for the first wicket.
