The three day open junior golf championship warps up on the 18th of December 2013 at the Royal Colombo Golf club.
It was indeed a celebration time, when young Golfers from around the circuit competed and achieved feats on par with their older counter parts. The competition was high and keenly contested with the youngsters showing immense prowess. The junior Golf championship functioned as a preview to fans as to who will be leading Golfers in the future. Prima being the main financial bearer of the event solely focuses on providing a platform for the youngsters to exercise and showcase their skills. Young Golf enthusiasts were at their best performance satisfying Prima’s search for young talent.
The junior Golf championship featured a range of age categories. Opening with a category named bronze, the youngest participants were below 10 years in age. Surprisingly they were almost as good as an average adult golfer even at this young age. Nigel Fernando had a best of 85 walking away with the championship. The 1st runner up of the bronze category was Mishan Hirushan. Following him was Prabath Guneshan, Vikesh Thangadre, and K. Dinushan at 2nd, 3rd and 4th runner up positions.
The most heated up category was the Silver division. With a game changing performance from Ishira Fernando many Golfers were excited to see the scores in the Silver division popping above the past records. The highest was 245 shots to finish the whole gold course. In comparison it was almost the same as the senior gold category where the highest score was 224. As with this impressive performance Ishira Fernando was the obvious winner of Silver division. Following was Sathsara Dilshan. Armand Flamer Caldera and Prashan Heendebiyage at the second third and forth positions respectively.
The Gold division representing the 15 – 17+ age group was the winner of overall awards in the Junior Golf Championship. The winner of the Gold’s at 224 was the best recorded hit which made him the overall winner of the tournament – Sachin De Silva. At the second place losing 6 points from the first place at 230 Prashan Peiris was the runners up in the overall tournament as well the Gold division. Zaffar Sikkanadar was a tie with Prashan for the runners up position however according to the last round performance; Prashan was picked over Zaffar for overall runners up trophy. Lastly, I Illeyarajah was the third runners up in the senior category.
