President gold cup men’s and women’s volleyball championships to kick off

202

President’s Gold Cup’ grand finale, organized by Sri Lanka volleyball federation in collaboration with Dialog Axiata as the sole financial partner, is scheduled to take place on the 7th of December 2013.

The women’s grand final will take place at 1.00PM and the men’s final will be from 3.00PM on wards at Youth indoor sport stadium.

Having a history of 8 years the President Volleyball Gold Cup Championship was initiated to promote the game in the village context. Being the national game, government has taken many steps to preserve the game around the island. As a result what started off with fewer than 400 teams taking part in the first year has grown up to include 4420 teams by 2013. The participant teams reached a high of 6700 in 2011 with the inclusion of all Gramasewa areas in Sri Lanka. However, the 2013 edition is to follow sticker rules to include only residents of a certain village for over 3 years to represent the teams, which has lowered the participating numbers.

Gracing the event as the Chief Guest will be Hon. Mr. Mahindhananadha Aluthgamage, Minister to the sport ministry, and as guests of honor President of the volleyball federation, hon. Dilan Perera, President of “Tharunyata Hetak” Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksha, Director General to the department of sports developments Ranjanee Jayakodi, CEO of Dialog Axiata Professor Hans Wijesuriya, Head of Marketing, Amali Nanayakkara and Heads of Volleyball Federation.
