Sri Lanka Women’s Hockey outfit who are competing in Women’s Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Cup 2025, Jakarta, Indonesia displayed a much improved performance yesterday against Uzbekistan.
At the early stage of the game, Sri Lankan ladies were threatening the Uzbekistan defence and their effort was paid off with a well earned Penalty Corner. Sri Lanka managed to find the back of the net and a goal was given. But surprisingly a few seconds later the goal was turned down by the head referee.
Then Uzbek lasses settled and came into the game and scored twice in each quarter. Ladies from Central Asia enjoyed a 2 – 0 comfortable lead at the half time.
Determined Sri Lanka outfit launched a counter attack in the third quarter by making full use of a penalty corner and Imesha Weerabahu went to the score sheet as the goal striker.
In the last quarter Sri Lanka swiftly pulled the ball into scoring circle by deceiving the Uzbek defence and Nipuni Fernando made an excellent stroke in no time to square the game.
Though the game ended in a draw, the Sri Lankan camp was the happier side due to their late comeback by trailing 2 – 0 at the half time. Uzbekistan goalkeeper was adjudged as the player of the match as she definitely saved the game for her side by preventing numerous scoring opportunities.
In the first game Sri Lankan lasses were thrashed by Hong Kong as 5 – 0 and in the following game against Singapore they displayed much improved performance, but went down by 5 – 2 score margin. Vimukthini Kaluarachchi scored a couple of goals for the losing side.
