Persistent rain disrupted the opening day of the first Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, allowing only 20.4 overs of play before an early stumps was called.

Taking advantage of the overcast conditions, Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva won a crucial toss and chose to bowl first, backing his seamers with a 3-1 pace-spin attack to exploit the assistance on offer at Kingsmead.

Playing XI

South Africa: Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Temba Bavuma (C), David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Kusal Mendis(wk), Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando

Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi opened the batting, but the two Fernandos made the most of the helpful conditions, dismissing both openers with just 14 runs on the board. Asitha provided the first breakthrough in the third over, with Markram caught by Angelo Mathews at slip, before Vishwa removed de Zorzi thanks to a diving catch by Kamindu Mendis in the cordon.

Vishwa then created an opportunity to dismiss South African skipper Temba Bavuma early, but Dimuth Karunaratne couldn’t hold on at slip when Bavuma was on 1. Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs attempted to steady the innings, but Lahiru Kumara had Stubbs caught at slip, ending the partnership at just 32 runs.

Kumara struck again in his next over, knocking David Bedingham’s off stump out of the ground, pushing South Africa deeper into trouble at 54 for 4. The visitors should have the fifth wicket soon after when Bavuma edged a hook shot to the keeper, but the dismissal was overturned as Kumara had overstepped, allowing Bavuma to survive on 20.

Shortly before lunch, rain intervened with South Africa at 80 for 4. Bavuma remained unbeaten on 28, with Kyle Verreynne at the crease.
