Sri Lanka fell short of a well-organized Bhutan outfit, 4-1, in their second game of the SAFF Women’s Championship today (21st October), making their final game against Nepal a must win to qualify to the next stage of the tournament.
Sri Lanka, coming off an excellent performance against the Maldives, entered the game with high hopes of delivering another strong display. However, the Bhutanese side struck early, with Deki Lhazom opening the scoring in the 7th minute, capitalizing on Sri Lanka’s clumsy defending.
Sri Lanka searching for an instant reply played far better football than what they did before the goal was scored. With a good period of play Sri Lanka found the back of the net through skipper Thushani Madushika in the 23rd minute to level the score.
Not too long after the equalizer the Bhutanese restored their lead when Dorji Edon scored in the 32nd Minute.
Sri Lanka, eager for a second-half comeback, were outplayed by Bhutan both offensively and defensively. Bhutan added two more goals, extending their lead 4-1
An improved performance is expected form the Sri Lankan girls in their upcoming game against Nepal. Where a win will most probably secure a semi-final spot for Sri Lanka.
