The Sri Lanka Men and Women’s Rugby 7’s outfits are all set to leave the Island on the 3rd of October to Kathmandu, Nepal to participate in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024.
The Men’s team was announced last weekend during the Mercantile 7’s tournament however, the Women’s team was announced last afternoon by Sri Lanka Rugby.

The Women’s team comprises of players mainly from the Tri-Forces along with a single player from CR & FC. Six Navy Players, three Army Players, Two Air Force Players make up the mix alongside the aforementioned plyer from CR & FC.

Hard-hitting Randika Kumudumali from the Sailors will be leading the women’s team as Sanjeewani Wijethilaka, N J K Dilrukshi, Dilini Kanchana, Shanika Madumali, Samantha Jayamali and Sandika Hemakumari are the other players to feature from the Navy Women’s team.
Dilini Kanchana, Referee cum player Charani Liyanage, and Umayangana Thathsarani are from the Army Sports Club while Sanjeewani Perera and Krishnakumar Hekashini are from the Air Force Sports Club and the only player from CR & FC if Idusha Janani Perera.
The Women’s team will be coaches by Shamlie Nawaz, assisted by Strength & Conditioning Coach Dilan Soysa along with Sujani Rathnayake the Manager and Sanka Dishan De Silva the Masseur.
The Fixtures for the tournaments — Men & Women — have been released by Asia Rugby with The Men’s competition comprising of 14 teams and the Women’s competition including 8-teams.
The Men’s tournament is broken down into 4 groups, 2 of them with 3 teams and 2 with 4 teams. The 8-teams of the Women line up as 2 groups of 4 teams.

Men’s Competition:
The Sri Lanka Men kick off their campaign against the impressive Kazakhstan out fit on the 4th of October at 09:24 (SL Time).
Next up Sri Lanka face Qatar at 13:15 (SL Time) and Saudi Arabia at 17:45 (SL Time). These gsme will be played on day 1.
The first two teams from each group make it through to the Quarter finals while the third placed teams head into the Challenge Series as the two teams in 4th place play off for the 13th – 14th place play-off.

Women’s Competition:
A more straightforward draw sees the top two teams from each group play in the Cup Semi-finals while the 3rd and 4th placed teams play the Bowl Semi-finals.
The Sri Lankan women take on India at 11:53 (SL Time) in game one with Iran being the second game at 16:06 (SL Time) and Indonesia at 19:33 (SL Time)
