Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd Test

Kamindu Mendis’ record-breaking 182* and Kusal Mendis’ tenth Test century helped Sri Lanka declare at a mammoth 602/5 on day two against New Zealand in the second Test.

In reply, New Zealand lost both openers cheaply in the evening. At stumps, they had batted just 14 overs and were still trailing by 580 runs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka resumed their first innings at 306 for 3, with Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis at the crease. The two overnight batters extended their fourth-wicket stand to three figures before Glenn Phillips got the better of Mathews.

The 107-run partnership came to an end when Mathews top-edged a sweep, finding Will O’Rourke at short fine-leg. He batted for 185 balls but unfortunately fell 12 runs short of his 17th Test hundred.

Kamindu added another 74 runs with Dhananjaya De Silva, which saw the home side go past 400 in the morning. However, just before lunch, Sri Lanka’s captain became Phillips’ third victim, departing for 44.

Kamindu and Kusal batted patiently in the first hour of the second session. Suddenly, the keeper-batter switched gears after a slow start, hitting 4, 6, 4 off Phillips to complete his fifty.

The left-hander, meanwhile, notched up his fifth century in just his eighth Test. He continued piling on the runs, reaching the 150-run mark for the second time in his short career.

Kusal, showing great confidence, also converted his start into a big one, registering his tenth Test century with a six.

Kamindu continued to impress in his prolific Test career, achieving 1000 Test runs in just 13 innings, becoming Sri Lanka’s fastest and second-joint fastest in the world to reach the milestone.

The two Mendis’s put together a massive, unbeaten double-century stand for the sixth wicket as Sri Lanka declared their first innings on 602 for 5 after batting for 163.4 overs.
