Penalty drama as SLIIT are crowned Legacy Shield Football League winners

A nil-all game went into Penalties as SLIIT managed to overcome University of Sri Jayawardenapura 0 (7) – 0 (6) by virtue of a penalty shoot-out to secure the Legacy Shield Football League 2024. 

The final of the tournament was played at the SLIIT University grounds Malabe as the University of Sri Jayawardenapura battelled out against SLIIT for the Legacy Shield Football League 2024. 

The first half was a tight tussle, however, both teams were unable to break the deadlock given the dogged defence by the two sides and neither attacked being able to penetrate their opponents.   

Tackles were flighting as both teams got off the ground running, but neither were able to get across the defences as each side were built tight at the back. 

The second half too took a similar viewing as neither side were able to breakdown each other even though the two sides threw a bit of caution to the wind. 

Neither defence faltered as the game went straight into Penalties without extras time. 

The University of Sri Jayawardenapura took the first spot kick through Mohammad Musthaa and he made no mistake to put the his team in the lead. Nimanaka Chirath levelled things off his boot to level things. 

Both teams scored Penalty number 2 and 3 keeping the game alive. Sri Jayawardenapura scored their 4th penalty, however, Astro Lookman failed to convert his spot kicking, opening game wide and giving Sri Jayawardenapura an advantage.  

Stepped up Arvin Kawshika the vice-captain for Sri Jayawardenapura with the opportunity to end the game, but he unfortunately got under the kick, sending it over the bar, giving SLIIT another life. 

With the game going into sudden Lakshtha Aloka failed to beat Sachintha Jayasinghe as the keeper guessed and went the right way, giving SLIIT a chance to win it off the boot of Henuka Liyanage. 

Win it he did, slotting through and helping SLIIT to the Legacy Shield Football League 2024.
