Team Galle and Team Jaffna registered victories in the opening day of National Super League 50 Overs Tournament 2024.

Team Galle got off to a winning start as they beat Team Kandy by 6 wickets in the first game of the tournament.

After been put into bat first, Kandy posted a competitive total – 259/9 on the board on the back of a fine century by Ahan Wickramasinghe.

Wickramasinghe stroked 112 runs off 134 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. Galle seamer Dhananjaya Lakshan picked up 4 wickets for 36 runs.

Galle chased down the target with ease as they crossed over the line with 6 wickets in hand. Yashodha Lanka and Raveen de Silva pioneered the run-chase with brilliant fifties.

In the second game of the day, Team Jaffna overcame Team Colombo at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

Having been asked to bat first, Team Colombo posted a solid total – 269/8 on the board courtesy of vital knocks from Vishad Randika (66), Dasun Shanaka (49) and Ashen Bandara (44).

Isitha Wijesundara had an impressive outing with the ball for Team Jaffna, claiming 5 wickets for 60 runs.

Sandun Weerakkody and Ron Chandraguptha set the tone for Jaffna’s run-chase with a massive partnership at the top of the order. The duo added 147 runs off 153 balls for the first wicket.

Weerakkody scored 73 runs off 66 balls while Chandraguptha hit 63 runs off 96 balls as Team Jaffna got over the line in the 49th over with 4 wickets in hand.
