Jeffrey Vandersay’s best ODI figures ripped through India in the 2nd ODI, helping Sri Lanka to a 32-run win and a 1-0 lead at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
A superb 72-run partnership between Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis helped Sri Lanka post a competitive 240/9. Jeffrey Vandersay spun a web around the Indian batters, picking up 6 wickets for 33, and helped Sri Lanka beat India in ODIs for the first time since 2021.
Earlier, the hosts opted to bat first and strengthened their spin attack with a couple of changes while India remained unchanged.
Jeffrey Vandersay, who was named as Hasaranga’s replacement, made his way into the playing XI. Kamindu Mendis also returned to the side, replacing debutant Mohamad Shiraz from the previous game.
Despite losing the toss, India got off to a superb start with the ball. Siraj removed the in-form opener on the very first ball of the match with an outswinger that edged Pathum Nissanka to the keeper.
Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis showed some patience while batting in the first 10 overs and steadied the ship with a 74-run partnership in 16.5 overs. Eventually, both of them had fallen to Washinton Sundar off successive deliveries in two overs.

Fernando contributed a 62-ball 40 before giving a simple return catch to the bowler and Mendis was given out LBW for 30, leaving the home side at 79/3. Sri Lanka reached the three-figure mark at the halfway mark of their innings.
The middle order failed to make any significant contribution once again as Sri Lanka lost three wickets for 25 runs within 8.1 overs. Sadeera Samarawickrama perished to Axar Patel before Janith Liyanage and Charith Asalanka fell to Kuldeep and Sundar in consecutive overs.
At 136/6, Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis joined in the middle and added a valuable 72 runs, which helped the team surpass the 200 mark. Wellalage impressed again with the bat, making a 35-ball 39.
A 22-ball 30-run partnership from Kamindu and Akila Dananjaya provided the finishing touches before they were run out in the final over. Mendis contributed a useful 40 off 44 balls, while Dananjaya added 15 off 13.
Sundar was the pick of the Indian bowlers, bagging 3/30 in his 10 overs. Kuldeep also took a couple of wickets.
Chasing 241 to win, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a head start, accumulating 76 runs in the powerplay. The skipper notched up a 29-ball fifty. The Indian openers extended their partnership to 97 in 13.3 overs.
Vandersay produced the first breakthrough for Sri Lanka as Nissanka took a fine catch after Sharma attempted a reverse sweep. Sharma smashed 64 off 44 deliveries, hitting five fours and four sixes.
Kamindu Mendis took a one-handed stunner at first slip to remove Gill for 35, and Dube was dismissed for a duck as Vandersay picked up two in the over. He continued to run through the opponents’ batting order and eventually registered his maiden 5-wicket haul in ODIs.
KL Rahul played one onto the stumps as the 34-year-old leg spinner grabbed his sixth scalp, which restricted the visitors to 147/6.
Axar and Sundar put up some fight with the bat, but their 38-run stand came to an end when Asalanka held onto a catch off his own bowling. Axar walked back for a run-a-ball 44 before his partner was trapped LBW by the Sri Lankan spinner.
Siraj was followed by Arshdeep as India bundled out for 208 in 40.2 overs. Vandersay was incredible, finishing with 6/33 in 10 overs while the skipper Asalanka starred with three wickets.
Vandersay was named Player of the Match for his game-changing spell.
