National and Junior National Long Course(50m) Championships 2024

As the curtains of National and Junior National Long Course(50m) swimming championships fold Killer Whale Aquatics dominated both men’s and women’s categories winning the championships with massive totals of 768 and 694 total points. D. S. Senanayaka College secured the runner-up position in the men’s category with 299 points and Ladies’ College finished 2nd in the women’s category with 398 points.

The National and Junior National Long Course Championships 2024 organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union held for 5 long days at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex. In addition to Sri Lankan swimmers, a team of Maldivians competed under the Swimming Association of Maldives.

The overall junior boys’ and girls’ championships were won by St. Joseph’s College Colombo and Lyceum International School, Gampaha with 540 and 485 total points respectively. St. Peter’s College finished second in line in the boys’ category with 351 points while Lyceum International School, Wattala became girls’ runners-up with 410 points.

The awards ceremony admired individual champions in junior and senior categories.

  • Girls – Julie Daniella Hope from Cyclone Swimming Academy
  • Boys – A.I.M. Haathim from St. Peter’s College

National ( Senior) Champions

  • Women- Hiruki De Silva from Killer Whale Aquatics
  • Men – M.F. Muhammad from Zahira College and Matthew Abeysinghe from Killer Whale Aquatics

In addition, 6 new junior national records were established, and Ramudi Samrakoon renewed her own national record in last few days.

  • Boys under 15 4*100m Medley Relay – St. Joseph’s College with a time of 4:44.89
  • Boys under 15 400m IM A.I.M. Haathim from St. Peter’s College with a time of 5:12.77
  • Boys under 15 100m Breaststroke A.I.M. Haathim from St. Peter’s College with a time of 1:11.99
  • Girls under 15 100m Freestyle Julie Daniella Hope from Cyclone Swimming Academy with a time of 1:02.52
  • Boys under 15 200m Freestyle D.Y. Mallawaarachchi from S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia with a time of 2:04.66
  • Girls under 15 1500m Freestyle Rushalee Dissanayake from Musaeus College with a time of 19:37.05
  • Women’s 100m Breaststroke Ramudi Samarakoon from Killer Whale Aquatics with a time of 1:13.87

The highlight of this year’s nationals was as Mattew Abeysinghe OLY, swam his last meet in home waters announcing his retirement from competitive swimming. Abeysinghe is an icon in Sri Lankan Swimming being a two-time Olympian, and having many more achievements. His service for Sri Lanka swimming was appreciated sentimentally and uniquely by his teammates along with a token of appreciation by SLASU at the end of National and Junior National LC Championships 2024.
