Record-breaking Rossouw steers Jaffna Kings to fourth win

Lanka Premier League 2024

111

South African star Rilee Rossouw smashed the fastest hundred in LPL history, guiding the Jaffna Kings to a 7-wicket win against the Colombo Strikers in the 13th match of the LPL 2024, played in Dambulla.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Angelo Perera added 34 runs after being put into bat first. Once again, Gurbaz failed to capitalize on the start he got, throwing away his wicket after making an 11-ball 27.

Perera was not comfortable after the ball hit his helmet and he walked off retired hurt when he was on 34 off 30. Glenn Phillips continued his good form in the LPL with his third half-century of the season.

Thisara Perera came up the order, but his stay at the crease did not last long. As a result, the Strikers lost their way completely, losing another five wickets within 3.1 overs, including the wickets of Phillips (58 off 32) and Nipun Dhananjaya, who replaced the retired hurt Perera.

However, they still managed to get 188/8 in their 20 overs, thanks to some nice cameos from Dunith Wellalage (13 off 10) and Taskin Ahmed (15* off 10). For Jaffna, Omarzai and Fernando each bagged a couple of scalps while Allen was economical in his 4-over spell, giving away only 26 runs for one wicket.

Mendis continued his terrible form with the bat as Wellalage and Taskin provided a good start for Colombo, dismissing both openers within 4.1 overs.

However, Rossouw and Fernando took the game away from the Strikers with a brilliant 120-run partnership for the third wicket, coming off just 64 balls. The latter was dismissed by Shadab Khan after scoring his 13th fifty in the LPL.

The Proteas left-hander brought up his hundred off just 44 balls, overtaking Kusal Perera for the fastest hundred in the LPL and took the Jaffna Kings to a comfortable 7-wicket win with 9 balls to spare.

He stroked an unbeaten 108 in 50 balls, consisting of 12 fours and 6 sixes, and won the Player of the Match award.
