The Pakistani leg spinner Shadab Khan entered the LPL record books with his maiden T20 hat-trick which helped Colombo Strikers to a comprehensive win over Kandy Falcons in the 3rd Match of the Lanka Premier League 2024 in Pallekele.
Kandy Falcons have decided to bowl first once again after winning the toss. Colombo were reduced to 20/2 as the two experienced pacers in Kasun Rajitha and Dushmantha Chameera provided them an excellent start with the wickets of Shevon Daniel and dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz, respectively.
However, hard-hitting UAE batter Muhammad Waseem and Sadeera Samarawickrama managed to find regular boundaries inside the powerplay. In the process, they got 27 runs in the 4th over, bowled by Rajitha as they finished the 6-over phase on 78/2.
Skipper Hasaranga pulled things back when he struck twice in space of 3 deliveries, trapping Waseem LBW for a 18-ball 32 before castling Glenn Phillips for a 2-ball duck. Agha Salman shattered the stumps of Samarawickrama, leaving the Strikers at 111/5 after 11 overs.
Skipper Thisara Perera and Shadab Khan scored 38 and 20, respectively, but Chamika Karunaratne made the difference smashing 25 runs off just 10 balls which took Colombo Strikers to a massive 198/7 at the end of their 20 overs.
Hasaranga who was the most successful bowler for Falcons, bagged 2/30 while Rajitha was too expensive despite picking up 2 wickets as he went for 56 runs in his 3 overs.
Andre Fletcher showed a clear intent right from the start of their innings, striking 3 fours in a row to finish the first over from Perera. The introduction of Dunith Wellalage in the powerplay turned out to be gold as he sent Fletcher and Mohammad Haris back to the dressing room in the 5 over.
Chandimal continued to be aggressive and went after Karunaratne in the final over of the powerplay, smashing 5 consecutive boundaries which helped Kandy to post 66 in the first 6 overs after losing a couple.
Phillips and Shadab struck in two overs with the wickets of Chandimal (38 off 26) and Kamindu Mendis (7 off 11), leaving the Falcons at 80/4. Skipper Hasaranga and Mathews put up some fight and the duo blasted 23 runs off Phillips’ 2nd over to get some momentum back.
A 31-ball 60-run stand between them came to an end when Binura Fernando dismissed the veteran for 25. Soon after, Shadab’s fortunes changed the game completely when he picked up his maiden T20 hat-trick, becoming only the second bowler after Wanindu Hasaranga to reach the milestone in LPL history.
Hasaranga (25 off 14) was the first to go before Agha Salman and Pawan Rathnayake followed him with golden ducks as Shadab finished with 4/22 in his 4 overs. Wellalage castled Shanaka and trapped Rajitha in the same over to wrap things up.
The Falcons bowled out for 147 with more than 4 overs to spare as Colombo Strikers got off to a winning start this time by 51 runs. Shadab, who had a memorable LPL debut, was adjudged as the Player of the Match.
