DS Senanayake College secured their maiden win in their Rugby history over Trinity College Kandy, defeating the visitors 14 (2T 2C) – 10 (1T 1C 1P) at Havlock Park in second week fixture of the Dialog Schools’ Rugby League.
Both teams entered the fray following a win in week one, seeking to maintain their unblemished records in the season.
It was the hosts who opened the scoring at the quarter-hour mark as skipper Umagiliyage followed up an up-and-under, which Shan Althaf misjudged, to pounce on the bouncing ball and score under the post.
Janindu Wijesinghe added the extras as the home team surged to a surprise 7-point advantage. (DS 07-00 TCK)
The first half was dominated by the home side as they piled on the pressure on the visiting Trinity outfit.
The visiting players seemed to be on different wavelengths, meaning Trinity College failed to achieve any cohesion in their attack and looked scrappy in defense.
The Dons doubled their try tally, this time with a try through their forwards as Lankesh Wickramasinghe crashed over from the tail of the maul to compound the Lions’ woes. Wijesinghe slotted home the conversion to make it 14 points with halftime on the horizon.

With nothing going their way in the first half, the lads from upcountry came in with a changed game plan, and the second half was completely different.
In stark contrast, Trinity struck back through skipper Anuhas Kodithuwakku. He added the finishing touches to a well-drilled move, starting off the second half just as the doctor ordered!
Hulangamuwa failed to add the extras, not once but twice, as the Dons were penalized for charging down the conversion. (DS 14-05 TCK)
A game of two halves saw the Dons struggle to find their feet after the break, as Trinity College controlled proceedings.
Murad Raizan was the next to get on the scoresheet for the visitors; however, once the second conversion went astray, Trinity continued to trail. (DS 14-10 TCK)
Action heated up as the hosts were under pressure; however, Janindu strayed off the tee with the chance to extend the home side’s lead. His kick was unsuccessful, and neither team managed further points, as the Dons made history by defeating Trinity for the first time in their rugby history.
