After the record-breaking knock in the final ODI against South Africa at Potchefstroom, Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Team Skipper Chamari Athapaththu revealed her future ambitions of Cricketing career.

During the post-match press conference, Athapaththu revealed that she has set a goal for her team: reaching the Semi Finals of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

“I’ve worked so hard in the last 15 years and I’ve achieved a few things as a player, but as a Captain, I want to do more. I want to see my team in the Semi Final of this World Cup. That’s my wish,” Athapaththu said.

Sri Lanka have a hurdle to overcome before they qualify for the World Cup as they have to play the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, which will begin on 25th April in UAE. Sri Lanka need to be one of the finalists of this qualifier event to book their ticket to the mega event which will be held in Bangladesh later this year.

Though Athapaththu has set big goals, she accepts that the road ahead will not be a walk in the park for her team.

“I know it is a very big task for us. Every team is really good and every game is really important for us. But We’ll take it one battle at a time,” she said.

The Sri Lankan Skipper also revealed her retirement plans during this press conference.

“My retirement will be very soon, I can’t mention dates, but it will be very soon. For now, I’m looking after the young girls. I’ve built a young team. I want to see these young girls in the World Cup one day,” she added.
