Sri Lanka witnessed a batting collapse in their second innings but were firmly in control with a massive lead of 455 going into Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh.
The hosts resumed Day 3 at 55 runs for 1 wicket, with the overnight batters Zakir Hasan and nightwatchman Tajiul Islam remained at the crease.
The duo managed to battle out the first hour of play without any hassle, but Vishwa Fernando got back his rhythm to bowl out both batters with sharp in-duckers.
Bangladesh Skipper Najmul Shanto did not stay at the crease for long as he fell to the spin of Prabath Jayasuriya. The hosts were in a spot of bother at the Lunch break at 115/4.
Asitha Fernando struck twice quickly after the break to dismiss dangerous Shakib Al Hasan and out of form Litton Das in the same over. Mehidy Hasan too fell soon after as Prabath Jayasuriya trapped him in front for 7 runs.
The Bangladesh tail did not last long either as the visitors wrapped things up in quick time to bowl out the opposition for just 178 runs. All Sri Lanka’s premier bowlers shared wickets, but Asitha Fernando was the standout performer among them as he snared 4 wickets for 34 runs.
Sri Lanka did not enforce the follow on as they decided to bat again to give some rest to their bowlers. The Bangladesh pacers were potent enough this time and wiped off Sri Lanka’s top and middle order for just 89 runs.
The seamer Hasan Mahmud bowled his heart out and picked up 4 wickets for 51 runs. The veteran batter Angelo Mathews hung in there with a fighting knock – 39 runs off 50 balls – as Sri Lanka finished Day 3 at 102/6 and possessed a massive lead of 455.
