The 72nd Battle of the Golds between Sri Sumangala College, Panadura and Moaratu Maha Vidayalaya, Moratuwa ended in a draw today (30th March)  at Tyrone Fernando International Cricket Stadium, Moratuwa.

The second day of the game resumed as the Moratu Maha Vidyalaya batters took to the field with a determined objective to surpass the total set by Sri Sumangala College in the first innings, but the Sri Sumangala Speedstar had different ideas with sending back the overnight batsman Shehara Fernando to the pavilion off the third delivery of the day.

Isuru Fernando delivered a batting masterclass in the middle, crafting a magnificent century with 11 boundaries and 2 maximums. However, apart from the opening batsman Vihanga Nimsara who carried his bat throughout the innings with a watchful 61 no other batter managed to surpass the 20-run mark. Nimsara’s resilient innings provided the much-needed resistance for the Moratu Maha Vidyalaya side.

In Middle of  all Isuru Fernando chaos  Sri Lanka national youth cap Vishwa Lahiru brought all of his international Experience to play by picking up 5 wickets to disarray the Moratu Maha Vidyalaya innings.

With time running short in the day’s play, Sri Sumangala College commenced their second innings, although there was no time to determine a result from the match. Nonetheless, the Sumangala batters took a positive approach to their batting, maintaining a run rate over 4 runs per over. Opening batter Duranka Silva and fresher Rusith Jayawardene both notched up half-centuries, with both left-handers surpassing the 600 and 500 run marks for the season, respectively.

Sri Sumangala College, Pandora the current holders of the trophy having last won the Battle of the Golds will retain the trophy for the next year.
