New Sports Minister Harin Fernando has appointed a 15-member National Sports Council and a 5-member National Sports Selection Committee.
Dr. Maiya Gunasekera took over as the Chairman of the National Sports Council, replacing former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Arjuna Ranatunga, while Mr. I. U. Wickramasuriya has been appointed as Secretary. Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Sidath Wettimuny, former national athlete Sriyani Kulawansa and Professor Arjuna De Silva are some of the other members of the council.

Furthermore, the National Sports Selection Committee will be headed by Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva while former national Tennis player Arjun Rishya Fernando has been appointed as the Secretary to the Committee. Dr. Maiya Gunasekera will be part of this committee as well.
