Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara has picked up a left-thigh injury during training ahead of their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter against Afghanistan in Pune, ThePapare reliably learns.

After bowling a spell during Saturday’s afternoon training session, Kumara complained of pain and therefore was sent for an MRI scan in the evening.
The scan has revealed a quadriceps tear thus ruling him out of action for at least two weeks. Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera who is currently with the team as an injury replacement has been approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee.

Kumara was the Player of the Match in Sri Lanka’s 8-wicket win over England in Bangalore. He picked up 3 scalps for 35 runs accounting for the wickets of England captain Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Ben Stokes.

Kumara is Sri Lanka’s third injury casualty in the competition so far. Earlier, skipper Dasun Shanaka and fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana were ruled out of the World Cup due to Quadriceps and Shoulder injuries respectively.
Chameera, who was not picked in the initial 15-member squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to a pectoral injury has now been declared fully fit. Chameera first picked up the injury when he played in June against Afghanistan in ODIs, but after recovering from that, he re-injured himself whilst playing in the LPL in August.
Sri Lanka has won two games on the trot out of the five played so far. Sri Lanka’s 6th match in the campaign will be against Afghanistan on Monday (30th October) in Pune.
