History was made yesterday at the Beire Lake as Sri Lanka embarked on a journey in Powerboat Racing at the Dialog F2 Powerboat Challenge.

Organized and endorsed by the Lanka Powerboat Association which is the first of its kind lived upto its expectations and entertained the many spectators who made their way to the Beire Lake.

The Dialog F2 Powerboat Challenge had two main events, the first one being the Challenge itself which involved experienced pilots from Britain, while the second one being the Defence Challenge which allowed the participation of the best pilots from the defence service to compete against each other.

The winner of the Defence Challenge was judged on technique, style by a separate panel unlike the usual race rules since the drivers have not yet reached the required experience level to take on professional races. Flying Officer Rehan Gunathilake emerged as the winner of the Defence Challenge with a superior performance. Rohana Kumara(Navy) and Saman Kumara(Army) came in at first and second runners up respectively.

The Dialog F2 Powerboat Challenge proved to be an exciting encounter, especially since there were four powerboats contending for the title. After a grueling fight with John Masters up front , Barry Hall found his way towards the Championship  by finishing first in this 9 lap circuit.John Masters came in second place, while Ray Bernie emerged 3rd in a tight race.

Winner Barry Hall was three time British Champion in Formula 4 racing, and is currently racing a Forumla 2 Supercat.

This events definitely signals a new era for Sri Lanka sport, as it will help attract more championships of this calibre, and also portraying the country as a perfect destination for Formula 1 Powerboat Racing.
