The Ritzbury John Tarbat Senior Athletics Championship commenced on 13th September at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
On the first day of the championship, four tournament records were broken.
Malith Yasiru of Kahawatta Central College, managed to set the first record, with a performance of 19.19 meters in the U18 Boys’ Triple Jump event.
Ayomal Akalanka of Ambagamuwa Central College, who finished the Under-18 Boys’ 400m Hurdles event with a time of 52.30 seconds, managed to break the record in the event on his way to gold.
T. Mendis, who represented Lyceum International School, Wattala set a record in the Boys’ Under 18 High Jump by clearing two meters.
S. Himashani from Ambagamuwa Central College finished the Under 18 Girls’ 400m hurdles event with a time of 1.05.3 minutes, to break the existing record and win the race comfortably.
Kuliyapitiya Central College’s I. Tennakoon won the Under 16 Boys’ Javelin Throw event with a performance of 57.22 meters and Devapathiraja College’s T. Umesh won the Under 20 Discus Throw event with a distance of 43.96 meters.
U. Imalsha from Ambagasdowa President’s College finished the Under 20 Boys’ 5000m event with a time of 16:25.7 minutes to take home gold while S. Lakshani, who won the Girls’ event, finishing with a time of 19:14.3 minutes.
D.Pradeepani of Gampola Wickramabahu Girls’ College finished the Under 18 3000m with a time of 10:42.1 minutes.
On day 2 (14th), three new records were set.
Gampola Wickramabahu College’s T. A. Premasiri kicked off the day, setting a new games record when she finished the Under 16 Girls’ 800m event with a time of 2:14.02 minutes.
Ayomal Akalanka broke the other record of the day, in the Under 18 Boys’ 400m hurdles event, he completed the event with a time of 51.85 seconds and renewed the record he set on the opening day (13th).
The finals of the 200m event attracted a lot of attention and the Under 16 Girls’ event was won by D. Fernando of Lyceum International School, Wattala, finishing in 25.61 seconds with a new games record.
M. Bogoda won the Under 16 Boys’ 200m event with a time of 22.98 seconds while J. Wijethunga of Lyceum International School, Wattala took the win in the Under 18 Girls’ event with a time of 26.28 seconds.
S. Mario of Wennappuwa Joseph Vaz College won the Under-18 Boys’ event with a time of 22.51 seconds while the Under 20 Girls’ event was won by a standout performer in the national circuit, Dinara Bandara (25.04 seconds).
S. T. Kumara of Pannala Central College, managed to win the Under 20 Men’s 100m event, recording a time of 21.70 seconds.
Nattandiya Dhammissara Vidyalaya’s S. Avishka finished the Under 16 Boys’ 800 meters event in 2:00.25 minutes while D. Pradeepani of Wickramabahu National College, Gampola won the Under 18 Girls’ event to achieve her second gold medal.
Nethra Samadhi (1.64m) of Dikwella Vijitha Central College managed to win the Under 16 Girls’ High Jump event.
