The Blue & Gold Hockey Sevens Tournament, a collaborative effort between the Royal College Colombo and the Royal College Hockey Club, took place on August 12th and 13th at Reid Avenue.
This tournament which has a rich history, began in the year 1992. This year’s edition marked its 18th occurrence.
Amidst the intense competition, the Boys’ Cup Championship was claimed by St. Joseph’s College Maradana, showcasing an outstanding performance throughout the tournament. Equally impressive, the Girls’ Cup Championship title was secured by the players from Wennappuwa Holy Family Convent.
Both these teams tasted victory for the first time in the tournament’s history. This victory was particularly noteworthy as it marked a departure from the dominance that certain teams had maintained over the years.
In the Girls’ category, HFC Wennappuwa earned their spot in the final by triumphing over Swarnamali College from Kandy. On the other side, the girls from Ladies’ College Colombo secured their final spot by defeating Christ Church College Matale.
The ultimate victory in the Girls’ category was claimed by Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa, who defeated Ladies’ College 2-0 in a thrilling final.
In the Boys’ category, St. Joseph’s players demonstrated their prowess by overcoming the formidable team from St. Thomas’ College, Matale with a score of 2-0, thereby seizing the Cup Championship.
St. Joseph’s journey to the final included a victory over Kingswood College in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, St. Thomas’ College Matale, their opponents in the final, secured their place by defeating S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia in the semis.
In addition to the Cup Championship matches, teams also competed for other titles. Ananda College Colombo secured the Plate Championship in the Boys’ category, while Sita Devi Girls’ College emerged victorious in the Girls’ category.
The Bowl Championship in the Boys’ category was clinched by Trinity College Kandy, and Panadura Balika Vidyalaya claimed the Bowl Championship in the Girls’ category.
Recognizing outstanding individual performances, St. Joseph’s College player Abner Fernando was bestowed with the Best Player award in the Boys’ category. In the Girls’ category, Ishara Fernando of Wennappuwa Holy Family Convent was celebrated as the Best Player.
Goalkeeping excellence was also acknowledged, with St. Thomas’ Matale player A. B. Gamasekera named the Best Goalkeeper in the Boys’ category, while Dehara Senaratne of Ladies’ College earned the Best Goalkeeper award in the Girls’ category.
