Jamaica dominant in Sri Lanka’s first game

Sri Lanka suffered a huge 105-25 loss to world rank 4 Jamaica in their Pool C game in the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. 

Jamaica raced to a 11-0 lead inside four minutes before Thishala Algama added the 1st goal for Sri Lanka. Semini Alwis and Algama shared a couple of goals, but that was no match to Romelda Aiken-George, who had 19/19, and Rebekah Robinson, who scored 7 from 10. Jamaica led 26-5 at the end of the 1st quarter.  

The 2nd quarter was much of the same as Jamaica made it to 40-5 with Algama missing a couple of shots. Thereafter, both teams exchanged goals as the scores read 42-8. At Half Time, the scores read 52-11 (26-6). Algama had 8/11 and Alwis was 3 from 5. For Jamaica, Aiken-George only missed once from 34 attempts, while substitute Shanice Beckford was 11 from 15.  

The beginning of the 2nd half saw Jamaica bringing the towering 1.98m Jhaniele Fowler, who started scoring with ease. Head Coach Thilaka Jinadasa shifted Dulangi Wannithilake to Goal Attack from Wing Attack, and Alwis from Goal Attack to Wing Attack, as Sri Lanka had a much better latter half of Quarter 3. Though Wannithilake missed two, Sri Lanka scored all seven goals through Algama (7/8). The 3rd Quarter ended with scores reading 75-18 (23-7). 

The 4th Quarter started with both Fowler and Algama exchanging goals (80-22), but Jamaica resumed their scoring spree, adding another 30 goals in the 4th Quarter. Sri Lanka got only 7, as it ended 105-25. Sri Lanka shot 25/36 at 69.4%, while Jamaica had 105/117 at 89.7%.
