The Asia Cup 2023 tournament will be hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka according to the hybrid format proposed by Pakistan, PTI (Press Trust of India) reported.
This year’s Asia Cup was scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan, but with the Indian team expressing its unwillingness to visit Pakistan, a problematic situation arose regarding the hosting of this year’s tournament.
Then, as a solution, Pakistan brought a proposal to hold the tournament under a hybrid format (Pakistan and India playing in a different country). But earlier BCCI and ACC did not express their interest.
Also, Pakistan earlier proposed the United Arab Emirates as the other host country. But many ACC member countries expressed their displeasure with it, pointing out the problems of the country’s temperature at the relevant time.
Accordingly, the Asian Cricket Council, headed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, is expected to approve PCB’s proposed ‘hybrid model’ for conducting four non-India Asia Cup games in Pakistan while all the matches India will play in this tournament, which is to be held from the 1st to the 17th of September this year, will be held in Sri Lanka. There, the match between India and Pakistan, representing Group A in the preliminary round of the tournament, will also be played in Sri Lanka.
This issue between India and Pakistan could have affected the One Day World Cup to be held in India in the future as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy and this decision will be a reason to alleviate many such problems.
Although it was held in the T20 format last year, this year’s Asia Cup will be held in the 50-over format. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will compete in one group, while India, Pakistan and Nepal will compete in the other group.
