Golden Triumphs and Record-Breaking Feats: Sri Lankan Athletes Shine on Day 2 of the 20th Asian Junior Athletics Championship

On the 2nd day of the 20th Asian Junior Athletics Championship held in Korea (05), the Sri Lankan athletes displayed their prowess on the track and in the field, securing two Gold medals and one Bronze medal.

Middle distance athlete Tharushi Karunaratne emerged as the star performer of the day, clinching two Gold medals for Sri Lanka. In the Women’s 800m event, Tharushi exhibited an incredible performance, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:06.64 minutes to claim the Gold medal. This was a notable feat as it was Tharushi’s second medal in the tournament.

Adding to her medal tally, Tharushi teamed up with Jayesh Uttara, Vinod Ariyawansa and Shehan Dilranga for the mixed 4x400m event. Their collective efforts led them to an emphatic victory, securing another Gold medal for Sri Lanka. The team’s outstanding performance resulted in a record-breaking time of 3:24.41 minutes, surpassing the previous national record of 3:26.39 minutes.

Joining the ranks of Sri Lanka’s medal winners was triple jumper Malith Yasiru. Demonstrating remarkable skill and determination, Yasiru leaped a distance of 15.82 meters, securing a medal in the event.

Despite facing tough competition, Dinara Bandara gave her all in the Women’s 100m Finals, crossing the finish line with a time of 12.04 seconds. Her efforts earned her a respectable eighth-place finish, highlighting her potential as a promising sprinter.

Apart from these Athletes, Vinod Ariyawansa participated in the Men’s 400m hurdles event. Finishing in fifth place with a time of 54.51 seconds, Ariyawansa was unfortunately unable make it through to the next round.
