Kumar Mithunraj bagged his 3rd gold while two new games records were set on day 3 of the 63rd Junior National Athletic Championship 2023 at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksha Stadium.
Mithunraj, the boy from Hartley College Jaffna, secured his 3rd gold winning the Hammer Throw event with a distance of 38.91m. Day’s 1st record was set by Nithinsa Mandani from Yatiyana Central College in the women’s U23 hammer throw event. She achieved a distance of 40m. Incidentally she holds the U20 record too, which was set in 2022 (37.47m).

Also, in the hammer throw U18 girls’ event Yuthara Linduli Jayaweera from Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda set a new record of 36.79m. In the 10,000m U20 boys’ category Suman Keeran from Mulankavil National School, Kilinochchi won with a timing of 35:35.92mins. In the U23 boys’ category M.S.A. Fernando from Colombo District won with a timing of 33:29.62mins.
In the women’s U20 long jump event Madushani Herath from Nannapurawa MV, Bibile equaled the games record with a jump of 6.06m. She equaled the record set by Anoma Sooriyaarachchi (Southland BV, Galle) in 1998.
