Day 2 of the National Super League 2023 saw Galle and Dambulla take the upper hand in their respective fixtures against Kandy and Jaffna.
Kandy vs Galle
Galle dominated day 1 thanks to a ton from Sohan de Livera, going to stumps on day on 356/3. They continued their good work on the 2nd day, thanks to a magnificent double century by 23-year-old Pasindu Sooriyabandara. The right-hander, who came in on an overnight score of 97 and carried his bat through to the declaration, finishing on 214*. He received able support from the lower order, with Suminda Lakshan (74) and Kavishka Anjula (59) chipping in with half centuries.
Galle declared on 656/9 and soon had the Kandy batters in trouble as Anjula picked up the wicket of Kasun Vidura in the 3rd over of Kandy’s response. Experienced batters Sandun Weerakkody, Lahiru Udara and skipper Sahan Arachchige followed in quick succession as Kandy were reduced to 62/4 – Anjula picked up 2/13.

Dambulla vs Jaffna
Dambulla too came into day 2 with a healthy total on Day 1, adding a further 137 to their overnight score before being bowled out for 426. Ashan Priyanjan missed out on a half century, but the Dambulla tail wagged, with Chamindu Weerasinghe, Dushan Hemantha and Lahiru Samarakoon all putting in some valuable cameos.
Left-arm orthodox bowler Shashika Dulshan was the pick of the Jaffna attack, claiming 6 wickets for 131.
Jaffna put together a good response, posting 220/7 in just 50 overs before stumps were called. Ron Chandragupta was unlucky to miss out on a century, falling 3 short but nobody else could cross the 30s leaving Jaffna a deficit of 206 at the end of day 2.
