Yorkshire’s Mathew Fisher claimed career-best figures of 5/34 to give the England Lions the advantage on Day 1 of their Unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A at the Galle International Stadium.
After a run-fest in the warm-up game against the Sri Lanka Board President’s XI last week, the visitors found an easier challenge coming up against the Sri Lanka A batters who folded for a paltry 136, an hour into the post-lunch session.
Fisher claimed the big wicket of Nishan Madushka early in the innings and then later the last 4 wickets to fall, including Sadeera Samarawickrama, the highest scorer for Sri Lanka A. Samarawickrama offered some resistance with 43, but was the first to fall after lunch as the visitors picked up the last 4 wickets for 26 runs.
The hosts then struggled with the ball as Alex Lees and Haseeb Hameed put on 125 for the 1st wicket. It was a welcome turn of fortunes for skipper Hameed, as he was dismissed for 0 & 2 in the warm-up game in Colombo.
Lasith Embuldeniya picked up Lees and later Tom Abell but half-centuries from Hameed and Tom Haines saw the Lions finish Day 1 on 249/3, already 113 runs ahead of the hosts.
