Five 2-day matches of the U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (27th January) at several venues across the island.
Thurstan College managed to claim honours in the drawn traditional encounter against Maliyadeva College, played today at Thurstan College Grounds. Shanikya Deshapriya’s heroics with the bat and the all-round brilliance of Vihas Thewmika were the highlights of the drawn game.
Deshapriya scored a century in the 1st innings while contributing with a half-century in the 2nd innings, taking his match aggregate to 197 runs. Thewmika scored 112 runs with the bat while claiming 4 wickets with the ball.
The traditional encounter between S. Thomas’ College and St. Sebastian’s College commenced today at Mount Lavinia. The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first, and managed to post a decent first innings total on the board on day one.
Nathan Caldera and Mahith Perera impressed with the bat for the Thomians, scoring half-centuries, while Vimath Dinsara starred with the ball for the visitors, snaring 4 scalps for 36 runs. In reply, St. Sebastian’s College posted 15/1 at the close of play on day one.

The traditional encounter between Trinity College and Mahanama College also commenced today at Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
Having been asked to bat first, the hosts were bowled out for 208 runs as Inuka Karannagoda ripped through the Trinity batting lineup, taking 5 wickets for 42 runs. In reply, the visitors were also in some trouble with the bat as they ended the first day’s play on 56/4.
