Two games of the U19 Division I Limited Overs Cricket Tournament 2022/23 were worked off yesterday in Matara and Pannipitiya.
Trinity College claimed the top spot of Group X in Tier A as they thrashed St. Thomas’ College Matara by 6 wickets in Matara. The Matara Thomians, still searching for their first win of the tournament, were bowled out for a mediocre 74 within 33 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Left-arm seamer Manula Kularathne was the chief destroyer for Trinity as he destroyed the Thomian top-order with 3 early wickets. The boys from Kandy were able to finish the game early as they reached the target in just 18.4 overs despite losing 4 wickets. This is Trinity’s third win in four games.
In Pannipitiya, hosts Dharmapala College suffered their fifth consecutive defeat of the tournament as they fell short of the finishing line in a thriller against St. Joseph Vaz College. The boys from Wennappuwa struggled throughout their way to reach the modest target of 156 set by their opponents. Wicket-keeper batter Hansa Mihiranga’s unbeaten knock of 57 helped them cross the line in the 46th over with just 1 wicket in hand. In bowling for the victorious St. Joseph Vaz team, skipper Menusha Pabasara and Tharindu Eshan claimed 3 wickets apiece. This is their third win in four games.
