The Final of the SLC Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament 2022 between Tamil Union C & AC and Sebastianites C & AC began today at the SSC Grounds in Colombo. Batting first, Tamil Union posted a modest 201 for 7 at the end of the rain-shortened opening day.
Sebastianites Skipper Sandun Fernando, standing in for regular Captain Tharusha Fernando who unfortunately misses the all-important final, elected to bowl first after winning the toss, and they were straightaway in the driving seat with some early wickets. Opening the bowling with their most successful bowler of the tournament, ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Ratnayake, the boys from the Moratuwa club removed 4 wickets, giving away just 57 runs within the first 23 overs.
Tamil Union’s explosive middle-order batter Ravindu Fernando then led the fightback for his club with 2 valuable partnerships worth 42 and 62, for the 5th wicket with Santhush Gunathilake and for the 7th wicket with Kavindu Pathiratne, respectively. Fernando remained unbeaten on 63 when the heavens opened up just before tea. The persistent rain forced the umpires to call it an early end for the day as both teams shared almost equal honours.
Tharindu Ratnayake, who has already grabbed 3 out of the 7 wickets fallen, and Ravindu Fernando (63*), will hold the key for their respective teams when they walk out early tomorrow for the 2nd day’s play.
