Sri Lanka Golf- Junior development committee conducted a two-day golf tournament with the intention of molding the young talent of junior golfers. An intensive training session was conducted for the blooming golfers prior to the tournament by SLG coaching professional Priya Hemantha who was attainable throughout the weekend to lend a hand to the kids in all aspects of the game. The enthusiasm of the juniors towards the game was delightful, throughout the training session they were led to experience a links course and tough conditions.
The training session was followed by a golf tournament which was played over 18 holes at the eagles golf links china bay, Trincomalee, under two age group categories 9 – 14 years and 15 – 18 years off the ladies’ tees red markers and men’s tees yellow markers respectively. Sankanath Hesara won over his rival with a gross score of 178 points [85 & 93] at the 15 – 18 years age group category whilst Alokshna Weerasinghe emerged the title of the first runner up with a gross score of 180 points [92 & 88]. In the 9 – 14 years age group category Adithya Weerasinghe won over Janeesh Sasmitha with a gross score of 174 [84 & 90].
The award for the “Longest Drive” was awarded to Yehan Kethnula and the award for the “Closest to the pin” was awarded to Thanuja Kalhara who showed flying colors throughout the whole tournament.
The awards were given away by Golf professional Priya Hemantha & the President of the Junior Golf Academy Anuradhapura Mr. Mannaperuma.
Sri Lanka Golf the governing body of golf has joined hands with the Sri Lanka Air Force in facilitating the training programs and free access to junior golfers at Anuradhapura to play both courses regularly, further promoting the development of the sports Island wide.
