The 100th National Athletics celebratory symposium has been postponed indefinitely owing to the ongoing situation in the country.
2022 was all set to be a grand year for the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka as we celebrate its’ 100th year. However, with the intensifying political situation in the country, the AASL has decided to postpone this event until further notice.
However, the 100th National Athletics Meet that was scheduled for the 8th, 9th and 10th of April is still expected to go ahead as planned. The meet will take place at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium on the abovementioned dates.
This Nationals is an important event, with it being the final selection trial for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (July/August 2022) and a gateway for athletes to showcase their best performances prior to the 19th Asian Games (September 2022). The authorities will keep a keen eye on the top performers to later form a group of approximately 20 athletes to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Foreign participation at the meet is still expected as ThePapare.com reported earlier. Major South Asian countries have been invited to partake in the more competitive events at the Nationals.
