Tharindu Ratnayake & Vishal Silva give semifinal hopes for Sebastianites C & AC

Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament 2022

The 3rd and final day of 9 matches played as part of the SLC Major Emerging 3-Day Tournament 2022 happened today (20th March) concluding the 5th week of the tournament. Six games produced results today making the total results of the week as 9 while the remaining 3 ended in draws.

Sebastianites C & AC having defeated SSC in their 1st game of the tournament went on to add another win against a ‘Big Club’ to their list of victories today beating CCC by 8 wickets at their backyard in Colombo. Having secured a handy 1st innings lead of 187, the visitors set themselves a target of 116 runs to win with not many overs left in the day. A 39-ball unbeaten 60 which included 3 sixes and 3 fours by opener Vishal Silva, a former Captain of St. Anthony’s College Wattala, helped the Sebastianites chase down the required target in just 12 overs handing them a thrilling 8-wicket win. With the ball, it was the ambidextrous Tharindu Ratnayake again who did the damage for Sebastianites claiming his second 10-wicket haul of the tournament in consecutive games.

Sebastianites’ fight for a semifinal spot was further assisted by Air Force SC as they upset the table-toppers Moors SC, beating them by 5 wickets. Following skipper Dinuka Dilshan’s century Moors confidently declared their 2nd innings on 339/8 setting a target of 172 for the home team. However, a brilliant knock of 82 by opener Kemira Wijenayake ensured that Air Force chased down the required target in 44.1 overs.

Sebastianites having 2 more games left as opposed to Moors who have only 1 game left, would feel more confident of toppling the group leaders to win the sole semifinal spot of Group A as they are just only 8.24 points behind them.

The fight for the top spot in Group C will continue further as the game between the group toppers Tamil Union C & AC and Ragama CC ended in a draw with the home team Tamil Union taking major honours. Despite the draw, a couple of entertaining knocks unfolded at the P. Sara Oval on the final day. Initially, it was Ravindu Fernando of Tamil Union who scored a 109-ball 113 with 16 fours and 2 sixes. Then later towards the end of the day, chasing 381 Ragama started the innings with their dashing openers Pathanian Thevindu Dickwella and Thurstanite Yohan Liyanage and went on to give it a proper go scoring 258 in 49 overs at a rate of 5.26. Liyanage remained unbeaten amassing 155 in 137 deliveries with 11 fours and 10 massive sixes. Peterite Lahiru Dawatage also joined the party with a half-century to assist Liyanage.

In Galle, Army SC kept their semifinal dreams alive defeating Galle CC comfortably by 197 runs. Their lead spinner Kaumal Nanayakkara starred once again completing a match-bag of 10 wickets with a 6-wicket haul in the 2nd innings. Navy SC, Police SC and Panadura SC also recorded wins beating Lankan CC, Badureliya CC and Nugegoda S & WC.

Following the drawn game between NCC and Chilaw Marians CC at NCC grounds in which off-spinner Sheshan Silva starred with 6 wickets for Chilaw Marians in the 2nd innings, the semifinal spot from Group B now completely depends on the one last game remaining in the group. Table-topper Negombo CC will walk in as favourites to finish on top while Saracens SC also still has an outside chance of causing an upset semifinal entry. The Group B decider will start the next Friday while 8 more games will start on the coming Saturday.
