Wesley force a draw despite Lahiru Amarasekara’s 10-fer

Wesley College managed to draw their Under 19 Traditional Cricket encounter against St. Joseph’s College which concluded at Darley Road on Saturday (19th March).

Right-arm off-spinner Lahiru Amarasekara picked up a match-bag of 10 wickets as St. Joseph’s College dominated the 105th encounter. Having won the Bryan Claessen – Arthur Hakel Memorial Trophy back in 2020, the Josephians retained the trophy for one more year.

On Day 1, the hosts produced a stellar batting performance amassing 404 for 5. Wicket-keeper batter Sadeesh Jayawardene struck 106 off 111 balls, while Muditha Lakshan and Hiran Jayasundara contributed with 94 and 77 respectively. At stumps on day one, the visitors were 45 for 1. However, on day two, the tall and lanky off-spinner Amarasekara bamboozled the Wesley batting picking up 6 wickets for 30 runs in the first innings. He bowled 20 overs as Wesley fought valiantly for nearly 75 overs for their score of 174.

The Josephians enforced the follow-on and at close of play, the Double Blues were reeling at 78 for 8 in 44 overs. Amarasekara went onto pick up 4 more wickets for just 14 runs.

Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda registered their second win in their SLSCA Under 19 Division 1 Tier B Tournament 2022 defeating St. Aloysius’ College, Galle by 6 wickets in Ambalangoda.

Hasitha Rajapaksha slammed an unbeaten 89, while Maneesha Rashmika struck a fifty as the Sokians chased down 235 set by the visitors with more than 14 overs to spare. After opting to bat first, St. Aloysius’ College posted 235 runs on the board. Rajapaksha excelled with the ball as well, picking up 3 wickets for 36. Dumindu Naveen top-scored for the boys from Galle with a fine 53.
