Jaaneman Malan’s third ODI century secured South Africa a comfortable 67-run (D/L) win against Sri Lanka in the rain-shortened 2nd ODI match at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
25-year old Malan made 121 off 135 balls to steer the Proteas to 283 from their alotted 47 overs. He was ably supported by Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klassen, who made 51 and 43 respectively. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 197 despite Charith Asalanka top scoring with a well-compiled 77 off 69 deliveries. Tabraiz Shamsi picked up career best figures of 5 for 49.
The game was halted twice by the rain. Initially, the start of the match was delayed by 90 minutes. After opting to bat, the Proteas openers, Aiden Markram and Malan, got off to a solid start. However, Chamika Karunaratne drew first blood in his first over the 9th in the innings when he edged Markram for 21 with a good length delivery, as Minod Bhanuka held on to an easy catch.

Reeza Hendricks, coming in for injured Temba Bavuma, partnered up with Malan to set a solid foundation for the Proteas. Both of them used their feet well against the Lankan spinners and scored the odd boundary to keep the scoreboard moving.
Hendricks fell right after reaching his 3rd ODI fifty, when Dhananjaya De Silva deceived him with a length delivery which the batsman completely missed, as the 96-run partnership ended in the 28th over.
Rassie Van Der Dussen brought out the usual conventional sweeps and reverse-sweeps, but was cleverly stumped by Minod Bhanuka off Wanindu Hasaranga as Sri Lanka tried to stem the run-flow by taking wickets.
However, as soon Heinrich Klassen walked out to the middle, the visitors pressed on the accelerator by punishing some loose bowling by the Lankans, especially Akila Dananjaya and Wanindu Hasaranga.
Klassen and Malan scored 86 runs off 54 balls for the 4th wicket to dominate the Lankan bowling. Both Klassen and Malan were dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera in consecutive balls. However, the Proteas managed 58 runs in the final 5 overs of the innings.
Chasing 284 runs in 47 overs, the Lankan reply was dented by some quality fast bowling as Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder dismissed Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Minod Bhanuka in the space of six balls.
Centurion from the previous game, Fernando edged straight to first slip, while Rajapaksa picked up his second duck, courtesy a perfect bouncer from Rabada, which took the batsmen by surprise as the ball deflected off the glove, straight to the wicket-keeper. In the first ball of the next over, Mulder found the outside edge of Minod Bhanuka as the Lankan top three were back in the pavilion for just 19 runs in 5.1 overs.
Charith Asalanka started off his innings, counter-attacking the seamers. He shared a 42-run stand with Dhananjaya De Silva. Tabraiz Shamsi strangled De Silva down the leg-side courtesy a DRS as the hosts were further dampened to 61 for 4.
Asalanka continued to impress with his classy batting as he kept the scoreboard moving to keep Sri Lanka in the hunt. He reached his third ODI century, in only his 7th innings and started to give an opportunity for the home team while batting with skipper Dasun Shanaka.
At the 25-over mark, when Sri Lanka were 114 for 4, another rain interruption changed the course of the game. The revised target was 265 runs in 41 overs with the hosts needing 151 from the remaining 16 overs.

After the rain break, Sri Lanka lost three crucial wickets within four overs to pretty much hand the game to the Proteas. Dasun Shanaka and Charith Asalanka were both undone while attempting slogs off Shamsi. Wanindu Hasaranga became debutant George Linde’s maiden wicket.
After being 147 for 7, Chamika Karunaratne made a brisk 36 off 23 balls and partnered up with Dushmantha Chameera to add 45 runs for the 8th wicket. However, Karunaratne’s dismissal ended slightest of hopes left for Sri Lanka. Shamsi removed to the final two wickets – Chameera and Akila Dananjaya to complete his maiden five-wicket haul.
The series is levelled at 1-1 with the decider to be played on Tuesday (7th September) at the same venue.
