The third and final day of the 2021 National Athletics Trials wound up with a chain of sizzling finals at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Starting the day off with the long-distance events, the Women’s 5000m went to A. N. Priyadarshani for a time of 19:52.31min. D. S. Dissanayake took home the Men’s winnings of the event with a time of 14:50.90min.
Heptathlon star Lakshika Sugandi clinched the 100m Hurdles title, while Janidu Lakwijaya did well to seal the Men’s title. Sugandi clocked in at 13.95sec, while Lakwijaya timed in at 14.27sec.
Dilshi Kumarasinghe capped her winnings at 2 with a win in the 400m on Day 1 and a win in the 800m today. Her winning time in the 800m clocked at 2:02.52min. The Men’s 800m title stayed with Rusiru Chathuranga with a time of 1:49.82min.
The highlighted events of the evening were the 200m sprints. Nadeesha Ramanayake did well to hold on to the Women’s 200m title with a run of 24.28sec. She mentioned briefly that this timing would have been better if she was challenged for the top spot by her other counterparts.
100m National Champion Amasha De Silva opted out of the 200m race, citing injury. Mohammed Safan of the Sri Lanka Army claimed a well-fought title in the Men’s category with a timing of 20.81sec.
Shyama Dulani won the Women’s 400m Hurdles event with a time of 1:01.67min, while D. Darshana took the Senior Men’s 400m Hurdles event with a time of 53.97sec.
