The Sri Lanka National Athletics Trials of 2021 commenced yesterday (7) at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Owini Chandrasekara of Bishop’s College achieved a new Junior National record for the Women’s Shot-Put event with an impressive effort of 13.02m. She finished first at the trials with Priyangika Kumari and D Clarence finishing second and third respectively.

Starting the meet off, K Shanmugeshwaran successfully emerged as the champion of the Men’s 10,000m event with a time of 32:29.31min.
Nilani Ratnayake took complete control of her pet event, the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase to win first place with a time of 9:57.82min. L Ariyadasa finished long after behind Ratnayake, with a time of 11:04.52min with N Kumari grabbing third place.
R M S Pushpakumara grabbed his usual Gold standing in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase event with a time of 8:59.51min.
M Madushani won a well-deserved gold at the Women’s high Jump with a performance of 1.65m. Koshila Amarasekara and Senali Imeshika finished behind, both clearing the height of 1.62m at completion.
Anjani Pulawansa comfortably won the Women’s Long Jump event with a leap of 6.26m.
A heated Women’s 100m dash ended with the reigning National champ, Amasha De Silva claiming the event with a time of 11.79sec. 12.07sec was the time clocked in by Shelinda Jansen to claim second place.
Himasha Eshan left no space for intruders in the Men’s 100m event as he sprinted through to victory with a time of 10.58sec. Young Chamod Yodasinghe came up second with a time of 10.81sec to claim second.
After a true nail-biting finish, reigning South Asian Champ Dilshi Kumarasinghe claimed victory over the more experienced Nadeesha Ramanayake in the Women’s 400m event. Kumarasinghe clocked in 53.42 seconds to beat an injured Ramanayake who finished with a time of 53.48sec.
The latter was stretchered off the field for medical examinations on a leg injury shortly after.
Kalinga Kumarage’s return to the 4000m track was worthwhile this time, as he managed to equal his PB. He finished on top with a time of 45.99s while M Gunaratne finished in second with a time of 46.82s. Aruna Darshana only managed to finish in third place with a time of 46.91sec.
