South Asian record Holder Himasha Eshan and Kandy sensation Amasha Desilva were crowned the Men’s and Women’s 100m champions at the 98th National Athletics Meet, this morning (28).
The meet concluded its third successful day today at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
10,000m – Men’s
A.K Tharanga started the day off with a win in the Men’s 10k event with a timing of 30:42.15min. South Asian medalist K. Shanmugeswaran had to settle for the Silver medal this time with a time of 31:07.53. Third place went to S D Gunasekara who clocked in 31:16.67min.
Pole Vault – Men’s
H S E Janith secured the Gold medal with a solid performance of 4.70m in the Men’s Pole Vault event today. Clearing the 4.30m mark G S Jayantha and R P Murugayya placed second and third place respectively.
Triple Jump – Women’s
South Asian Gold Medalist Hashini Prabodha managed to continue her streak by winning the Gold medal at this year’s Nationals in the Triple Jump event. Her winning distance was 13.07m. The Silver medal was won by Rashmi Nirodha clearing a distance of 12.63m.
High Jump – Men’s
C L Mendis representing Sri Lanka Army won this year’s Men’s High Jump event clearing a height of 2.10m. Sanju Tharuka cleared 2.05m to secure Silver while Roshen Dulmith took home Bronze clearing the 2.00m mark.
Put Shot – Women’s
T K Fernando of Sri Lanka Air Force muscled her way into a Gold medal throwing a distance of 14.10m. Fernando beat out D Muthunayake and Priyangika Kumari who finished second and third with throws of 12.70m and 11.53m respectively.
Javelin Throw – Women’s
South Asian medalist Nadeeka Lakmali returned to the track to claim her prize in the Women’s Javelin Throw this morning with a throw of 53.97m. Nadeesha Lekamge, her counterpart at the South Asian Games 2019, finished second with a throw of 44.98m.
100m
Himasha Eshan and Amasha De Silva both booked their slots to the Final first and went on to win their respective events with ease. Eshan was in contention with M Safan, Chanuka Sandeepa and Vinoj Suranjaya. While De Silva’s plate was full with Rumeshika Ratnayake, Lakshika Sugandi and Shafiya Yamick.
The Men’s final was a heated one at start but Eshan’s experience puleed him through to a comfortable win clocking 10.27sec. The fight for Silver was an extremely close call with Chanuka Sandeepa untimately finished second with 10.49sec while Suranjaya finished at 10:50sec to take home the Bronze.
Amasha De Silva, a force from the gun shot, powered her way to Gold in the Women’s final with a time of 11.55sec. Returning from last year’s injury, Rumeshika Ratnayake finished second at a time of 11.88sec. Shafiya Yamick settled for third place with a time of 12.05sec.
400m Hurdles
NSF superstar Shyama Dulani secured Gold with a comfortable lead and clocked in 1:02.90min. D Wickramasinghe and Subhani Abeyrathne finished second and third respectively. Their timings read 1:03.22min and 1:07.00min in order.
The Men’s 400m Hurdles was once again dominated by the Rathnasena brothers, only this time it was a reverse win. Younger brother Asitha Rathnasena turned the tables and beat out his brother Asanka to grab Gold this Nationals. His timing was clocked in at 52.09sec. J L Prasanjith finished with a time of 53.22sec to grab second while Asanka Rathnasena finished close behind with a time of 53.23sec.
