Sports Minister Namal Rajapakse has expressed that he wants the national body Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) to push for a revamp in their structure to aid the progress of the sport in the country.
The minister added these comments in an online video call organized by the national body.
With the Schools’ Rugby League called off for 2020, the minister expressed his concern for the schoolboy graduates who will leave behind their college jersey without playing their final year.
“We can make amends to the structure to make it U20 from U19 and the second move will be to organize an U23 tournament” he said, addressing the concerns of the outgoing schools’ rugby captains.
The national rugby captain turned minister expressed his faith in the governing bodies to come up with an alternative for the schoolboys who missed out on their chance of playing this season.
Sri Lanka needs to focus on sevens
Speaking exclusively on the aspect of sevens rugby, Rajapaksa added that he is confident that SLR will revive the Super Sevens tournament in the coming year.
The Carlton Super Sevens took place from 2010 to 2015 in a franchise-based format attracting world-class talent in the likes of Pio Tuwai, Carlin Isles and DJ Forbes.

Sevens tournaments of this nature will build up the sevens landscape of the country and help Sri Lanka to achieve success in the shorter format of the game.
There were several initiatives brought up earlier for sevens targeting the 2016 Rio Olympics as well the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but none of them made it beyond the planning stage.
