LPL franchise Galle Gladiators announced; Star Player is Shahid Afridi

Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the much-awaited Lanka Premier League (LPL) will officially launch in Sri Lanka from 14th November and will be played until 6th December.

The tournament will be conducted by UAE based company; Innovative Production Group (IPG) who has signed up with Sri Lanka Cricket to own rights for licensing of franchises, broadcasting, production, and ground rights of the event for 5 years. (2020-2024)

5 Teams will be named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla, and Jaffna that will participate in the League. Matches will be played at 3 international venues the Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium.

Galle Gladiators announced

Launching the league’s first team, the owners of the Galle based team Galle Gladiators were announced today at a Media Conference held in Pakistan.

Pakistan-based company ‘Omar Associates’ who also own the team Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan Super League, has bought the ownership of the Galle Gladiators. 

Director of ‘Omar Associates’, Nadeem Omar revealed that the T20 World Cup-winning skipper Shahid Afridi will be the icon player of Galle Gladiators and former wicket-keeper batsman and head coach for Quetta Gladiators Moin Khan, will be the head coach of the Galle Gladiators.
