Resuming day 1 on 191 for 4, the overnight pair, Dineth Jayakody and Sadeesh Jayawardene, added 44 more runs to put the Josephians in a strong position. Their 192-run stand for the fifth wicket broke the previous fifth wicket record partnership in the series, which was 158 runs by Joe Misso and Patrick Perera in 1938.

At 235 for 4 with almost 12 overs remaining, the boys from Darley Road seemed like they were getting a substantial lead. However, the dismissal of the centurion Jayakody sparked a major collapse.

Jayakody fell for a brilliant 122 off 130 balls with 13 fours and 3 fours. His partner Jayawardene made 70 off 103 deliveries. The rest of the batsmen threw their wickets away as the Peterites restricted the Josephians to just 259. The final six wickets fell for just 24 runs inside just 22 balls.

Trailing by 35 runs, St. Peter’s started off cautiously in their second innings but lost wickets at regular intervals. They were in a spot of bother at 67 for 3 in the post-lunch session. However, Rishika Dawatage and vice-captain Nipunaka Fonseka somewhat resurrected the Peterite second innings by adding 66 runs for the fourth wicket. Dawatage reached a well-deserved half-century – 68 off 144 deliveries with 7 fours. His younger brother Lahiru made a half-century in the first innings on Friday.

The Peterites were well placed by tea with only four wickets down. However, left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage gave a glimmer of hope for the Josephians as he took three wickets in just seven balls to restrict the Peterites to 179 for 7 after being 4 down for 174 runs at one stage.

The ninth wicket pair, Ruvin Seneviratne and Danal Hemananda, batted till the end to defy the Josephians. Both Senevirathne and Hemananda reached their half-centuries in the last hour of play as St. Peter’s College retained the Maurice Le Goc Challenge Trophy. They added 88 unbroken runs for the ninth wicket, which broke the previous Peterite record of 53 runs which was held by Tony Opatha and Rodney Patternott in 1965.
